Vito Russo (July 11, 1946 -- November 7, 1990) was an American LGBT activist, film historian and author who is best remembered as the author of the book The Celluloid Closet (1981, revised edition 1987). He was a co-founder of the Gay Activist Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and ACT UP.

A documentary film on the life of Vito Russo, "Vito," premiered at the 2011 New York Film Festival and on HBO June 23, 2012.
