Each year on New Year's Day, folks brave the frigid winter temperatures to participate in what is believed to be the oldest "Polar Bear Plunge" in the country. Swimmers gather in Memorial Park in Waterville, Ohio. The local tradition was started by Herb Mericle in 1929.
