On May 2 at 3am, there was a large empty plot at the Port of Chesapeake off Victory Boulevard, which Enviva LP ("Enviva") had acquired in January to facilitate the export of approximately three million tons of biomass fuel.
Less than five hours later, engineers had inflated a dome to a height of 157 feet and a diameter of 175 feet. Construction crews are now busy inside the structure, completing the infrastructure necessary to receive, store and load up to 50,000 metric tons of wood pellets, which will then be shipped from the site to European markets for energy production. That construction is expected to take less than six months.
