A traditional blues song written by W.C. Handy that crossed over into the pop charts, to provide the rest of the world the sounds and music of the African American community that had originated the music. One of the best known and often performed folk blues standards, it has those special sounds that make the blues an American original, truly from the roots of the United States where the music offers powerful and emotive sounds. Like other blues songs, it reflects the daily themes of people's lives. This music spread into pop and country music, shared by country musicians who adopted its strains, and that helped bring the blues to people around the world. Modernized in 1958 with the Kingston Trio and the Newport Folk Folk Festival and with rocking beats added blues styles were woven into the fabric of music, creating rock and roll and jazz, that we now hear from Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and others.
