The name of IDC means Insulation Displacement Connector. This name describes the connection style of the connector to cable. This style is also called as "piercing".The contacts have the form of little jaws which pierce the insulation and provide connection between the wire and the connector's contact. While piercing the ribbon cable is deformed and this makes a reliable contact with low resistance.IDC connectors are suitable for a range of cable connections of inch and metric standards, save time for assemblage and provide precise alignment. A self-cleaning contact makes a reliable connection. There are two kinds of the connectors:- with a pitch divisible by 2.54 mm inch standard - with a pitch divisible by 2 mm metric standard The connectors are intended for a ribbon cable with 1.27, 1 and 0.635 mm pitch.Number of contacts is 10 to 64.IDC connectors are intended for operation within the temperature range from -40 to +105 degrees and support the voltage over 500 volts for 1 minute at current rating 1 A.IDC connector package may contain a clamping strip for additional fixation of the ribbon cable in the connector.IDC connectors and their counterparts may have a special key which excludes incorrect connection.IDC connectors as well as ribbon cables find their application in computer industry and electronic productions for interunit connections.
