In Romania, a NGO - Funky Citizens - is aiming at empowering people to keep elected officials accountable. A disconnect between citizens and the budgetary process in the country has resulted in a lack of citizens’ participation and budgets that do not reflect their needs. Long-term fiscal planning is not encouraged and poor public spending often lacks accountability. Bani pierduti is challenging all that. Meaning “Lost Money” in Romanian, it is an online platform that allows citizens to create their own budgets with a feedback loop that advocates these results directly to elected representatives. It was one of the winning projects from the International Anti-Corruption Conference’s (IACC) Social Entrepreneurs Initiative in 2012. Find out why.
