How to practice Spey casting on snow or on a parking lot etc. relative smooth surface where mono line does not get stuck. The key element is a very long nylon mono "leader" which is anchored far ahead. I did use a snow filled plastic bag 80ft of 55lbs is ok length for short line heads and short DH rods but 100ft or even longer for long rods and line heads allows to turn casting direction more and then "the feel" stays more natural. The line drag is not the same as in water so this does not master You to Spey but makes it possible to learn complete casting sequences and then on water You can concenrate to tune the timing and power just right.
