In The Standard 5: Special Effects, the latest edition of the education series aimed at designers and printers, Sappi takes us beyond traditional printing special effects with augmented reality (AR). AR opens up new possibilities by allowing the user to interact in the virtual world through traditional printed materials. The Standard 5: Special Effects designer, Kit Hinrichs of Studio Hinrichs, and Lisa Murphy of Metaio, an augmented reality company, talk about how AR expands the print experience and how it can be leveraged to create more sophisticated communications tools. Kit and Lisa demonstrate AR with "Super Dude" a character featured in The Standard 5. By tilting left and right, Super Dude comes alive, jumping and juking bowling balls, soup cans, and a dinosaur among other surprises.
