This is the Jean Alesi Experience. He dominated the race, with his fastest lap over two seconds up on any other driver. There was a sensational incident with a retiring Pacific but otherwise victory was looking secure. However, on lap 50 of 53, the V12 in the #27 car suffered its first breakdown of the season (*representing the car's 4th mechanical failure in 12 races), with the car coasting to a stop just before the pit entry. Alesi was awarded a 13th place finish; a very minor fillip. Schumacher went on to win to take a one point championship lead. Despite Herbert's point, Ferrari maintain a narrow lead.
