http://tuxdigital.com/linuxiseverywhere || http://tuxdigital.com/patreon On this episode of This Week in Linux, we've got some new releases from Bleachbit, KDE Falkon, Albert (the keyboard launcher), Caprine (desktop app for Facebook messenger), and more. We'll follow up with projects we've covered in previous episodes like Museeks, Tizonia, WINE, and the Librem 5. Then we check out the future roadmaps of some projects like KDE Plasma 5.13, Ubuntu 18.04, and Solus 4.
Albert author here. Just a slight correction and addition:
The launcher is not Python based. The language of the core and the native plugins is C++/Qt. Python extensions are the secondary way to extend the application. They allow rapid prototyping and generally opens the app extension to a wider community, since Python is easier and more popular.
Regarding the reason to use the launcher: When I started coding albert the whole point of it was to get rid of the dependency to a specific desktop environment. The deep integration of the launchers into the desktop environment made switching distros a pain. I had to learn a new keyboard launcher every time and often they were quite limited. But actually thats long ago and the goal nowadays is rather to make Albert a dominant alternative in all aspects rather than beeing yet another launcher. So even if you are on KDE there's a reason to use albert instead.
Thank you for spreading the word.
What do you think of the idea of taking some of the topics from this show and diving deeper as separate videos throughout the week? Would you be interested in that?
Thanks Michael, great show! How excited are you about the Purism phone - have you ordered one? Have you tried LineageOS? I am thinking of getting the Huawei Mate 10 and flashing it - good idea or not? Thanks!
For better or worse Kali is also available in the MS store, what makes this noteworthy is it also includes a full desktop that can be accessed via xrdp and they make it super simple to get working and compositing is also turned on and with a modest graphics card its smooth as silk. Sadly no support for sockets yet so many of the networking tools don't work or are limited even tho it has nearly full network access. I also dislike the notch sigh...
Great show again but the sound was again so bassy / thick, I had to dial all the bass out of my speakers to listen. I don't know if you changed something again or what causes this. Maybe you're too close to the microphone even?
