Prarthana Dalal, a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School in Leawood, is the winner of the 2011 International BioGENEius Challenge.
The Biotechnology Institute, which organizes the annual challenge in cooperation locally from KansasBio, says it's a competition for high school students who demonstrate an exemplary understanding of biotechnology through science research projects.
Dalal's project was titled "Modeling of human non-deletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) conditions in β-globin locus transgenic mouse models: The -175 (T to C) and -195 (C to G) A-gamma globin gene point mutations." She examined how genetic sequence changes can affect fetal hemoglobin production in mice, research that could help in the understanding of treatment of sickle cell disease.
Challenge winners were announced Tuesday at the BIO International Convention in Washington D.C. Kansas has a pavilion and several speakers at the event.
