This video demonstrates how reprogramming the SIMs game (from Electronic Arts) was able to produce a simulation of the a Smart Home (both as a controller for smart homes and as a development platform for creating embedded-agents and other supporting smart home software). In the video you can see both the real space being simulated (the iSpace) and the simulated environment. The fantastic thing about using the SIMs was that the artificial people could be used to exercise and evaluate the embedded agents being developed (evaluating agents in real-time in real environments is a resource bottleneck, as each development phase can take days or months, thereby tying up expensive resources; using the SIMs simulator allowed time to be accelerated and for researchers to have soft and cheaper copies of the iSpace). The project was conducted by Marc Davies, supervised by Vic Callaghan and dates back to around 2002. See http://ieg.essex.ac.uk for more details.
