The Witte's new wing is the best of both worlds. It breathes fresh life into the historic, beautiful Pioneer Hall, then in a bold new building, extends the hall towards the San Antonio River. Lit in the dappled sunlight underneath enormous pecan trees, the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center will soon become another cultural jewel in San Antonio's crown. But before it does, you get a sneak preview right here on Conversations.
The two best people to guide you through this are Witte President Marise McDermott and Curator Bruce Shackelford. If Bruce looks familiar, maybe it's because you've seen his expertise since nearly the beginning on The Antiques Roadshow. He brought that kind of knowledge into the concept and execution of the Heritage Center, and his eye for detail will delight you. With modern interactive electronics, Shackelford's new exhibit makes life in the old west far less the stiff and stodgy affair of posed daguerreotypes, and more like real life. Marise McDermott gives an overall perspective of the Witte Museum, and a preview of even more changes to come!
David Martin Davies guides us through history to the present, and even a glimpse of the Witte's future.
