Here is how I perform the Mongolian draw or thumb draw. It's my way of doing it that works for me. While I show using the thumb as a rest for traditional bows that lack a rest or shelf, this can also be done on a bow with a rest.
It can even be done with modern bows, just remember that you shoot off the opposite side as a three finger Mediterranean draw. That means that if you are right handed, find a left handed bow, or a bow with the rest on the right side. The opposite is true of lefties.
I regularly shoot a left-handed compound bow with this release with very consistent results.
