California's ranching heritage extends back to before there was even a state, when the California missions ran herds of cattle to sustain their people and manage their lands. The gold rush in the mid-1800s fueled a boom in population and subsequent increase in demand for beef that further cemented the need for cattle production in our state, which remains today a significant part of California's number one economic segment -- agriculture.
