A video shot by my Dad, on December 7th 1991, of me visiting the workshops of Jim and Rob Hysom of AE Optics/Astronomical Equipment Ltd. The Hysoms made many large amateur telescopes from the 1960s to the early 1990s and my 19.3-inch f/4.5 Newtonian was one of the last that they ever made. Eleven years earlier, in December 1980, Rob had delivered my 14-inch Cass-Newt, but now I wanted an even bigger reflector, for my new house in Chelmsford. Jim Hysom is shown in his optical workshop near Cambridge, having just finished grinding my 19.3-inch disk, with another of the same size being ground on a very Heath-Robinson looking machine. His brother Rob is then shown at his Harpenden workshop, working on the secondary mirror holder, R.A. circle assembly and giant telescope tube. Those were the days....real British telescope builders, not importing 'box shifters'.
The Hysoms were true craftsmen and there are not many of them left these days, if any!!
