The Department of Homeland security is gearing up for possible civil unrest during both the Republican and the Democrat conventions and prior to the election of 2012 and the Presidential Inauguration in January of 2013. The DHS has ordered approximately 150 sets of riot helmets, shin guards thigh and groin protestors and other riot equipment including several bullet proof booths used for checkpoints.

The DHS has also hired hundreds of additional security guards to protect federal property and buildings. There is fear that there could be riots and protestors at both the Republican National Convention held in Tampa Florida on August 27-30 and at the Democratic National Convention on September 3-6 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

While 150 sets of riot gear doesn't seem like a lot of equipment, the personnel tasked with wearing the additional equipment are Federal Protective Service agents that will not be in charge of crowd control, but they will be specifically tasked with protecting Federal buildings and interests of the government.
