Willow Smith released a surprise debut album on Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 after previously alluding to the date on Twitter without any other context. The archaeology-inspired name of the album is Ardipithecus, which holds significance to her personal growth as a recording artist.“Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth,” she tells The Fader. “I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs.”The 15-year-old is credited as the sole songwriter on 14 out of the 15 tracks, and the sole producer on 10. “These songs were created through characters I have developed within my mind,” she explains.
