A large flea market with around 1500 stalls is held in the grounds and surrounding streets of Toji Temple http://www.japanvisitor.com/japan-tra... in south Kyoto on the 21st of each month. On sale are kimono, antiques, dried foods, pickles, clothes, tools, textiles, ethnic goods, ceramics, plants, tea, masks and just about everything else. Some of the sellers come from families that have been doing business at the temple for centuries. Toji temple market is held on the 21st of each month as Kukai, a previous abbot of the temple, is believed to have died on the 21st and a memorial service is held for him at the temple on this day.
