THE ROOTS REMAIN is documentary film shot in Cambodia, directed by Jean-Sebastien Francoeur and Andrew Marchand-Boddy.
With FONKi, Visal Sok, Kosal Khiev, Lisha, Dj Illest, Peap Tarr, Lisa Mam and more...

Original Soundtrack by Steve Wright, and additional music by DJ Rob Viktum.

Synopsis:
From 1975 – 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime carried out a brutal genocide killing approximately 1.7 million Cambodians. They condemned the entire population to forced labour camps, executed anyone who posed a threat to their regime, and destroyed nearly all of the country’s historical and cultural records. It is estimated that nearly 90% of Cambodias artists and intellectuals where either executed or exiled. The once rich and thriving Khmer culture of music, dance, and art was reduced to a faded memory. Despite this dark past, the Cambodian people persevere. Today, as ancient customs merge with the vision of a new generation, the world is witnessing the birth of a new Cambodia.

Through the eyes of Montreal street artist Fonki, The Roots Remain ventures into the heart of Cambodia, documenting the scars of the past, the troubles of the present, and the cultural potential for the future.

In an emotional tribute, Fonki returns to Phnom Penh to paint a giant mural of his relatives killed in the genocide. Still haunted by the recent death of his great-grandfather, Fonki takes the audience on an emotional journey through modern day Cambodia as he confronts his family’s tragic history, meets with influential members of the diaspora, and re-discovers himself along the way.

Synopsis:
