Tango the Cat, written in 2011 for my cat, is my first work for six-mallet marimba. Before having Tango in the house, I was the king, now I am not. Inspired by the little creature, the work was written to have a fun theatrical piece to perform. The piece begins theatrically, with Tango acting up and running around with the main theme presented. The next section portrays Tango sneaking around intensely, finding something, but then is too scared to actually commit. Of course, he grows tired and falls asleep. Tango's "Chorale" is presented while he is sleeping. He then slowly wakes up, stretching each paw, one at a time. Finally he has stretched and nobly jumps up like the king of the house. The Main theme returns and life is good. The piece ends with his signature run and jump across the house, only to be... harmless.
