Weight loss surgeon from Las Vegas, US, talks about the difference between sleeve gastrectomy and plication of the stomach.
Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgery involves the reduction of the stomach by tapering its major section. It brings about hormonal changes as well. Hunger hormone -- ghrelin reduces and the person feels satiated easily.
On the contrary, plication involves the reduction of the stomach by infolding its major part. No hormonal changes are observed. Both the surgeries don't involve any foreign body.
Both the surgeries, gastric sleeve and plication of the stomach, are performed laparoscopically. Although both involve the stomach reduction, a major point of difference is the reversible option existing in plication surgery. Due to cutting of the stomach in sleeve gastrectomy, it cannot be reversed.
Surgeon has been performing all kinds of weight loss surgeries and the newly introduced plication of the stomach, interests him. He doesn't talk of its success as it is still under research.
