Lisa Shannon awakened to the atrocities in the Congo, where women are gang-raped and demoralized and decided to become an activist and a sister, leaving behind a successful company, a fiancé and security. She founded Run for Congo Women, a grassroots movement for Congolese women. Shannon chronicled her experiences in A Thousand Sisters: My Journey into the Worst Place on Earth to Be a Woman.
