Originally released in 1973, Dream On was Aerosmith's first single and while being the birth of the band, it also almost turned the band into a one hit wonder. A seemingly prophetic song that singer Steven Tyler first began writing in his teens, Dream On didn't do so well on the charts upon it's initial release. Dream On's album, Aerosmith, was under-promoted by the Columbia record label and it wasn't until three years later that band management convinced Columbia to re-release the single. The song went to number 6 on Billboard's Hot 100 and has been part of the lifeblood of rock and roll ever since.

Dream On has often been compared to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, even to the point of being called a rip-off. While sharing similar descending guitar riffs and both songs having an epic, arena-rock vibe, the two songs aren't as relative as one might think. The chord progression was inspired by Steven Tyler's father, a classically trained pianist. The song was written by Tyler over many years and it wasn't until he got together with Aerosmith that the song was finally able to be completed. The first performance of the song was played at about the same time that Led Zeppelin's IV, containing Stairway to Heaven, was released, but Dream On had been demoed and reworked for years prior to it's first performance.

Dream On has been featured on almost every Aerosmith live release and greatest hits record. It's a fitting first song as a tribute to Aerosmith, who, after numerous multi-platinum records and awards, would become the greatest American rock band of all time.
