Hemiparesis is weakness on one side of the body. The patient can move the impaired side of his body, but with reduced muscular strength. This makes performing everyday activities such as dressing, eating, grabbing objects, or using the bathroom more difficult. If it is by birth, it can result in delayed milestones and affect higher mental functions also.
Shakira Sonpra, a female baby of 4 years from parents immigrated to South Africa, was a case of premature born with club foot. She presented with delayed milestones, standing and walking disability along with low muscle tone and bulk of both lower limbs. At the age of four also, she used to crawl on her knees for her normal routines. Mild aggressiveness and lower confidence level was seldom noted. She was able to climb and pull herself using her upper limbs only.
During the counseling, doctors gave scientific awareness on what all in plan regarding the treatment procedures scheduled for Shakira to her parents which in turn made them highly motivated and to proceed with the planning's of the clinicians.
The classical approach of Ayurveda in handling these conditions as Oleation, Sudation, was followed in the form of Abhyangam, herbal poultices and oil enimas. As an aim to increase the muscle bulk of lower limb Kerala special njavarakizhy and mamsakizhy were done. Internal medication, gait training and permitted restricted exercises also supported well in the condition.
Towards the end of treatments, Shakira become able to stand without the support of caliper. She can walk with support continuously for 15 minutes at a stretch. Her confidence level has improved immensely and her aggressiveness has reduced almost.
