This is the fourth score in the series and the second score to be nominated for an Oscar the first being Goldsmith's original score for the first film. This is also the last score from the Star Trek Franchise to be nominated for an Oscar. In my opinion this is probably the worst score of the entire franchise. Leonard Rosenman whom is a fine composer, but he could never seem to break free from his Lord of the Rings themes. They are presented here in this score once again, and he would do so for Robocop II.

Of all the scores created for Star Trek this is largely considered the weakest, and it hasn't aged well. It feels embedded in 80s to such a large degree that it's difficult to really call it a Star Trek score. That being said the movie did take place in the 1980s instead of the 23rd century for most of the film.

Fortunately Leonard Rosenman would never score another Star Trek film.
