Dr Chris Barnes from UCL introduces his work as a systems biologist. Drawing an analogy from the development of steam engines, he believes the future of biology will be defined by science and engineering working in tandem, with synthetic biology taking the role of forward-engineering and systems biology taking the role of reverse engineering.
