Steve McElravy of New Life Ministries in Monmouth, Oregon gives a talk on How To Start A Ministry. Everyone has a ministry through their families, through their jobs and responsibilities, and even through their homes and other possesions. This talk is based on the verses at the end of Luke 9.

One of the things that Jesus emphasized in His ministry, and that we want to mimic as well, is the process of discipleship. You've probably heard the term, "discipleship" tossed around in Christian circles and maybe you've wondered what this discipleship thing is all about.

One of the things that Jesus emphasized in His ministry was the process of discipleship.

Maybe you've wondered what discipleship is all about. Actually there are three parts to discipleship. The first part involves hearing God's word. When Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, they physically followed Him around and went with Him wherever He traveled.

Obviously we can't do that today because Jesus is no longer physically here on earth. But we can follow Him by hearing His word. One thing we have that Jesus' disciples did not have is the completed canon of scripture. They did not have a nice bible like we have all compiled together containing sixty six books. They had part of it, and most of it, but they didn't have the completed New Testament. So they followed Jesus around and as they did they began to learn what the Christian life is all about.

But we have His word and we need to spend time in His word. We're not going to talk about that aspect of discipleship today.
