Helping farmers make climate-smart decisions: Farmers in many areas around the world face critical unknowns when making decisions about crop and soil management, especially decisions dealing with fertilizer use and the upcoming rainfall season. Two centers at Columbia University – the Agriculture and Food Security Center and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) are collaborating on a tool, known as SoilDoc, that provides farmers with information on their own soil as well as local climate forecasts. This information enables farmers to make decisions that reduce risk in soil and crop investments, and it helps them take advantage of favorable growing conditions. http://agriculture.columbia.edu/ http://iri.columbia.edu.
