The critics have spoken on the upcoming R-rated comedy 'The Watch' -- and they are not impressed!

'The Watch' stars three comedy aficionados, boasts SNL veteran director Akiva Schaffer, and credits the always-funny Seth Rogen as a writer -- but all that still isn't enough to save the movie, according to Hollywood's top critics. Ben Stiller leads as an uptight Costco manager who, due to a string of inexplicable murders, gathers together the local misfits and forms a neighborhood watch. Vince Vaughan, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade round out the group as a fed-up father, a gun-crazed outcast, and a foreigner who just wants to fit in. Things take a turn for the weird when the guys uncover an alien invasion, but, with a thoroughly rotten 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far, this sci-fi-thriller-meets-buddy-comedy seems to have missed the mark.

Roger Ebert said in sum, the movie "has lots of energy but not much inspiration." He was particularly disappointed with the R-rated tone, which he thought "so determined to be crude, vulgar and offensive that after a while I grew weary...It's not that I was offended; it's that I wasn't amused." Ouch, Roger, tell us how you really feel! Sheri Linden of the Hollywood Reporter felt that the story's weakness lay more in its lack of originality, complaining that "topliners Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn are playing the guys they always play, [and] the script... moves lazily from setup to punchline to setup, with no particular point and almost no punch." Lone positive reviewer Roger Moore (no, not THAT Roger Moore!) agreed that the movie's "plot is secondary," to the jokes, but called the it "a sometimes ponderous, sometimes explosively funny comedy."

Sounds like 'The Watch' will be good for a few laughs this weekend, but not much else! Are you guys gonna see it anyway? Let us know in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe to ClevverMovies for the latest news and reviews. I'm Vivian Fabiola, thanks for tuning in!
