Christine Toomey shares stories from her travels as a foreign correspondent and looks at the dedication and courage of women who choose to dedicate their lives to Buddhism. How can spirituality act as a source of empowerment for women in the face of adversity? In even the darkest episodes of human history there is a way to find light in the darkness - but as Christine reminds us in this thoroughly engaging talk - it is an art.

Christine Toomey is an award-winning journalist and author who has had an extensive career as a foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times reporting from over 60 countries. She has recently published her newest book The Saffron Saffron Road: A Journey with Buddha's Daughters – published in the US under the title In Search of Buddha's Daughters: A Modern Journey down Ancient Roads - chronicling the lives of Buddhist women globally.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
