On CVT or continuously variable transmissions, the TCM -- transmission control module uses two specific sensors to control the primary and secondary variator pulleys. These sensors are the input speed sensor and output speed sensor, also called, primary and secondary speed sensors.

The vehicle speed sensor is also the CVT output speed sensor slash secondary speed sensor, and detects the revolution of parking gear, generating a pulse signal. The pulse signal is sent to the TCM, which also converts it into vehicle speed. The input speed sensor, also called primary speed sensor, detects the primary pulley revolution speed, and sends a signal to the TCM.
