Burning of the Ornaments and Charms -- Osaka, Japan
I'm not so sure about all of this, but every year on New Years Day Japanese people go to one of many Shrines and Temples and pray. (Me too) They buy all types of charms for an array of issues, such as health, wealth, birth and so on. (Me too) But the real interesting part comes a couple of weeks after New Year when we take the charms from the year before to return them to the shrine. Why? I don't know. However they also take many different types of ornaments back to the shrine, and as you can see in the video they are burned. There is also a table at this shrine that offers a small piece of "Sweet Potato" and also a little "Sake". This is a very interesting custom to me, and I will try to find out a little more about it and post in the future.
