This BBC news story is about a call to end the Multiple Hot Branding of Exmoor pony foals. This footage contains scenes of an Exmoor pony foal being multiple hot branded, which you may find upsetting. However, this is currently one of the very few opportunities to see the practice, which is still being carried out in England and Wales. It is banned in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Sweden and shortly, Germany.
The call to STOP the Multiple Hot Branding of Equines in England and Wales asks for a complete ban on hot branding on any domestic horse or pony. As some free-living pony herd owners do need visual ID for their welfare and management, it is being suggested that they can apply for a derogation to use the minimum hot branding, but only where absolutely necessary, and only while alternative forms of pain-free visual ID are sought.
If you would like to help to make change to the Multiple Hot Branding of Equines in England and Wales, then please write to the Prime Minister, to the Rt Hon Jim Paice MP (DEFRA) and to your local MP. Thank you for your interest in this film and in this campaign. You can sign the Petition to Jim Paice MP at this link: http://www.change.org/petitions/defra...
