On the occasion of the vernissage and the opening night of SH Contemporary -- Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair -- celebrated respectively on the 6th and 7th of September, the visual artist and composer Roberto Paci Dalò presents a new live performance linked to the history of Shanghai before 1949. 上海当代艺术博览会的开幕之夜，将会在上海展览中心举办。意大利视觉艺术家／作曲家Roberto Paci Dalò（大鲁），9月6日和7日，会展现一场与1949年前的上海历史相关的表演。 At the core of his music-visual work is the story of the Shanghai Ghetto, an area of approximately one square mile, located in the Hongkou district of Japanese-occupied Shanghai housing about 20,000 Jewish refugees, escaping from Europe. The performance is based on visual and audio materials from the years between 1933 and 1949. This database of historical media has been converted into a live artwork. The seminal song 'Nights of Shanghai' interpreted by the star Zhou Xuan in 1949, is used as a point of departure. Through a process of decomposition, recomposition and sampling, represents the aural and sonic environment of the piece, becoming a texture -- made out of instrumental and electronic sounds, voices, soundscapes, archive materials -- that embraces the entire performance The projected home movies and travelogues were filmed in China between 1900 and 1939 by European travelers. Entirely sourced from the historical archive of the British Film Institute, these rare materials are shown in such a context for the first time, being screened in the gigantic main hall of the Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Together with the films are involved photographs, portraits taken by the Jewish photographer Sam Sanzetti, active in Shanghai between 1921 and 1957. These rediscovered images are also part of "Shanghai Ark", an exhibition included in the frame of the 9th Shanghai Biennale 2012.
