With SUSE Manager 1.7, you get the most efficient solution for managing a Linux environment with improvements for patch and update management, compliance and provisioning with support for PostgreSQL database.

SUSE Manager 1.7 provides improvements for:
•Patch and update management
•Flexible deployment options
•Additional provisioning features

The enhancements are supported through the following new technical features:
•PostgreSQL as a supported database option
•Provisioning of SUSE Studio™ images directly from SUSE Manager
•Migrating systems to new Service Packs from the SUSE Manager user interface
•Basic support for OpenSCAP compliance checking
•IPv6 support for management and provisioning

Patch and update management enhancements

SUSE Manager provides the option of updating an existing system to new Service Packs without completely reinstalling it. No manual installation is needed. Through the SUSE Manager interface, you get information about the current version of the existing systems. Afterwards, SUSE Manager offers you the various service pack migration options. As soon as you have chosen an option, SUSE Manager automatically migrates to the Service Pack. As part of the migration, additional extensions like SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension can be added.

Compliance improvements

IT compliance addresses how well the organization conforms with external regulations, industry standards, and internal policies. Failure to meet IT compliance requirements can be a costly mistake. SUSE Manager makes it easier and faster for IT organizations to align with various compliance initiatives.

SUSE Manager 1.7 offers a standard approach (OpenSCAP) to maintaining the security of enterprise systems. This includes the ability to audit software patch status, automatically confirm that servers have the latest security updates, check system security configuration settings, and examine systems for signs of compromise.

SUSE Manager 1.7 also offers improved search and reporting capabilities which allow you to easily find and capture valuable information about the Red Hat and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server systems that are being managed by SUSE Manager. These reports can be important for audits and compliance-related activities, providing detailed lists containing:
•System Inventory — All systems registered to SUSE Manager, including hardware and software information
•Entitlements — All organizations registered to SUSE Manager, sorted by system and channel entitlements and usage
•Errata — All errata relevant to the registered systems including full list of errata and affected systems
•Users — All users registered with SUSE Manager and systems the user can administer
•Channel — All packages within a channel including packages in each channel
•History — History of events
