Tom Murphy of Revenue Magazine talks with John Mulligan of SEO-PR about User Generated Content, following on Clay Shirky's keynote speech on day one of SES San Jose 2009. Murphy: One of the concepts that I've held dear in the ten years since I wrote my book is that the internet is the first mass medium that's controlled by the end-user. Clay talked about this in his own way, saying that the internet is the first medium that's naturally predisposed to group collaboration. I think that that's a really important idea, and that user generated content is just the natural offshoot of that. It takes a long time for society to learn how to use a new medium; it took us a long time to learn how to use the telephone -- and it took us a long time to learn how to use other interactive media. Right now we're about 15, 18 years into this new media cycle, and it takes about 25 years to adopt a new medium. I think the rise of Facebook and Twitter are symptomatic of society finally getting used to the new user generated content medium. As Clay says, when a technology is a boring, everyday part of our lives, (such as is the case with email) that's when we've really matured to a medium. Asked whether this means that we've peaked technologically with social media and need simply to practice and spend more time getting used to it in order to realize the potential of user generated content, Murphy replies that the user is more important than the medium and that web 2.0 was not a drastic improvement over web 1.0 so much as user savviness has grown to exploit whatever web has been available. Murphy sees the future of the web being a convergence of established media with the energy and passion of collective users. In this vein, Murphy is launching NewsWire21 to bring the worlds of user generated content and established media expertise together.
