Students from ETH Zurich and the design school ZHdK fashioned a wheel chair able to climb stairs safely and swiftly while also functioning as a conventional wheelchair. The Scalevo uses two rubber tracks that fold out to any angle and two large wheels on which the the chair balances while rolling on flat ground. A lone NI myRIO controls the motors and actuators involved. The control algorithm is that of an inverted pendulum. ETH Zurich students describe the details in this short video.
