Music of Immersion | Homage to a partnership 2002 - 2009

Suellen Primost (cello) was the lead musician with John Kadyk (clarinet/ steel drum), Marie Perry (accordion) with singer Ana Diane Landelle, They experimented and worked closely with Slobodan Dan Paich, ensemble founder and director, in creating an immersive performance mode for the theater and company signature sound, by combining the cello/steel drum dialog as a main music color, elaborated by clarinet, and punctuated/echoed by accordion. The music is not an incidental or add-on element in Artship's organic process of rehearsals, skills-building, inspirational improvisations and co-creation of the matrix for the emerging performance. The music is the oxygen, the birth, the life force of the performance.

Archaic Now: Creation of original contemporary music by the Artship Ensemble.

The Music for Burning of the Ancient Library of Alexandria is inspired by our research into the origins of music, e.g., deciphered Babylonian tablets with musical instruction, tribal chants from ethno-musicological archives ranging from Istrian, Albanian, Sardinian, and Corsican quarter-tone singing to Greek, Byzantine, Turkish, Gypsy, and Egyptian historic recordings. Our original music is also based on the study and playing of African, Asian, and Native American procreation chants. Artship is the beneficiary of a donation of ethno-musicological and folkloric dance archives, articles, papers, and field studies through the generosity of Vera Ilijin, the niece of the director's early mentor, Dr. Milica Ilijin (1910-1992). These archives represent an important element in the broad and continuous musicological/dance research, and inspire the creation of original contemporary work by the Artship Ensemble.
