During World War II, new phone and phone line installation basically ground to a halt as copper and other metals used in telephone equipment were diverted for military use. To explain the slowed progress of much-in-demand telephone services, the Bell Systems created this gem, a masterpiece of film noir, depicting a hard-boiled detective's search for the truth behind the lack of new phone service.

Spoiler: We never would have predicted that the person responsible was the butler, in the pantry, with the candlestick.
