Innovative Pipelining Strategies (IPS) is the product of a paradigm shift in the relationship between regulators and industry -- from adversarial to collaboratively sharing responsibility for environmental outcomes and achieving excellence. Devon, Stratus Pipelines and Alberta Environment's Partners in Resource Excellence (PRE) program partnered together to develop tools, technology and best practices to exceed minimum legislative requirements for pipelining on agricultural lands. This success led to an expanded partnership with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) and use of IPS principles on forested areas for a large pipeline project in the Oil Sands. The outcomes of IPS are three-fold: conservation versus reclamation, reduce industry's environmental impact and increase stakeholder participation in decision-making.
