Genki's rather obscure one-on-one fighter.

This is quite interesting of a fighter actually. Rather than sticking to the traditional format of best out of three K.O. battles like with Street Fighter, Fatal Fury and Mortal Kombat it instead has a traditional Karate tournament setup. You earn so many stars based on the way you finish the fight. This means rounds can be instantly completed by successfully performing a grapple manouver or by knocking down a dazed opponent.

While it has a very mediocre and forgettable cast of characters, the level of depth to Fighters Destiny's reversal system and combat was uncomparable to many other one-on-one releases of the time. It also had impressive graphics and sound (including voice bytes and music) as well as a number of bonus modes including Master mode which added to the longetivity of the game. Not bad for an early N64 release (Jan 1998).

Sadly Fighters Destiny was swept aside and forgotten eversince. It eventually saw a US exclusive sequel in 2000 but this fared even worse critcally and commercially. However while it has aged and admittedly been much usurped since 1998, Fighters Destiny is is a very inexpensive game to find selling for less than £3 used. Given the lack of fighters on the machine and lowprice tag it is worth a purchase.
