When you see tangerines, kumquats, persimmons and pomelos appear on the markets' tables, especially in Chinatown, it's a sign that Lunar or Chinese New Year or Tet (Vietnamese New Year) is near. Lunar New Year comes around middle or late January or beginning of February. Tangerine is eaten after the skin is peeled, kumquat is eaten whole after the fruit is washed. Unlike Grapefruit, pomelo has a thick skin, but it's sweet, fragrant and delicious. Pomelo is a very common and popular fruit in Viet Nam, and of course, I learned how to cut and peel pomelo from my mother.
