Is "religion" really a cross-cultural universal? Where do the modern European words for religion--from the German "religion" to the Portuguese "religião"--come from? (Hint: the Latin "religio," which originally meant something rather surprising).

This is the second in a series of lectures for Reddit in which, I (Jason Ānanda Josephson) will be discussing the history of the concept of "religion" and investigating debates around its universality.
