Male: This is the Talk of The Town Extra!

Meryll Rose: I’m Meryll Rose. No one wants to be involved in a car accident, but unfortunately, sometimes it does happen. Attorney Carrie LaBrec is here now to give us the do’s and dont’s if you’re in a wreck. Carrie, you handle many of the firms’ more serious accidents, are there some standard tips that you give your clients?

Carrie LaBrec: Yes, there are. Some of these tips can sound really common sense or basic but when you’re in the midst of the excitement and adrenalin of being in a car accident, it’s really easy to forget this stuff.

The main thing you want to do is focus on preserving evidence at the scene of the accident as early as possible. So you’re going to want to take pictures. Most people have a camera phone these days, if you’re physical able to take photographs of the – any vehicles that are involved in the scene of the accident and anything else that might have contributed to the accident.

The second thing you want to do is get any witness information, names, addresses, phone numbers and even email addresses of anyone who may have witnessed the accident. Don’t rely on the investigating officers to get that information for you.

And the third thing is if you are feeling any kind of pain or discomfort, seek medical attention right away, there’s no reason to wait, and again, the adrenalin of an accident might kind of put a mask on some injuries that are a lot more serious than you feel right at the time of the accident.

A couple of things that you want to avoid doing are talking to the other party’s insurance company. You don’t need to make any statements, don’t do any of that without talking to an attorney. You certainly don’t need to sign anything without consulting with an attorney.

And also, watch social media posts, you know, Facebook, Twitter. You know, don’t post pictures and talk about the accident because that stuff can really kind of back fire it on the road.

Meryll Rose: At what point should you talk to an attorney and is there a fee?

Carrie LaBrec: Well, it’s never too soon. I’d say call an attorney right away. And as far as the fee, we give free consultation, so there’s no reason not to contact us – contact us right away.

Meryll Rose: Contact thehigginsfirm.com.
