Mag loops, according to the theory, achieve the best efficiency if the loop has a very low resistance. Makers go to great lengths to minimise it.

As an experiment, I made a loop with fairly high resistance - and have been surprised at how well it works. It's made from 3mm steel fencing wire and choc-block connectors!

Although the efficiency should be terrible, it stacks up very well against a 1/2 wave dipole and a loop with low resistance.

Ok this is not a laboratory test and I'm not saying the accepted theory is wrong, just that you may not gain as much by lowering the resistance as the calculation implies!
