When my young transgender child transitioned last year, we were disowned by friends and family who didn't understand her gender identity and my choices as a parent. As her mother, I absorb the rejection, ignorance and hatred of others so she can experience the happy and genuine childhood that every child deserves. Despite my optimism and strength, the fear feels overwhelming sometimes.

During a troubling time last year a cherished friend told me that to survive I needed to stand in my truth. And it changed my life forever. Stand in my truth.

Now I've found a quiet place within myself that is abundant love. Love for myself. Love for my children. Love for the friends and family that stick by us through thick and thin. Love for the everyday person that shares their smile or gesture of humanity. Love for the people who have turned their back on us. Even love for those people who set out to do us harm.

It gets better. Just knowing that you are not alone is a start. If there is anything I can do to help, please contact me at Jen@JenniferCarrBooks.com.

My thanks to the It Gets Better Project for spreading so much light, hope and love. I have been and continue to be truly inspired. Best wishes- Jen
