RARE McDonnell promo film for the XF-85!!

Two of these machines were built; the concept being that if jet fighters could be carried as "Parasites" on board a bomber, this would eliminate the problem of the very short range that the early "Thirsty" jet engines were notorious for.

Although the concept was put into limited service for a year utilising the B-36 & F-84, the whole concept just created as many problems as it tried to solve; hooking up to the trapeze was extremely tricky at best, and at night, or in adverse weather conditions, proved next to impossible.

That period from the mid 1940s, through the 1950s however, produced some of those most interesting aircraft, when boundaries were constantly being pushed to the next level.
