Act 2, Scene 7-8 from "Tom and Sally in Paris," an opera in two acts by William Lavonis. Sally reveals to Jefferson that she is pregnant. Moved and stunned, he opens himself up to the possible decisions that now face them as a couple. He pleads with her to return with him to Monticello, painting an idealized picture of what life would be like. Sally is in conflict: to remain in Paris as a free woman of color or return with her lover to America as his slave.
