9/3/11 Farewell Party speeches...by Bruce McLellan (representing the local SF family that had the boathouse built in the 1940's and ran the concessions for the people for 68 years. He was put on a month-to-month lease 7 years ago, making costly improvements infeasible. Rec & Park who manages the boathouse, then used the condition of the building to claim McLellan was not a good tenant. When that didn't work they put out bids but choose the bidder who offered less rent and revenue than McLellan! The new tenant, an out of state souvenir chain is getting a sweetheart deal. Claims that the new tenant will put $233K into the historic restoration are false. Over the Ortega 20 year lease they will put in less than $1,000/mo. into capital improvements, AND will receive free gas, water and electricity paid by the people of SF.
Jeff Fones, boathouse manager for 16 years speaks after Bruce.
Then Robert Laws, a local atty. and boathouse supporter.
Lorraine Grassano, is the retired SF park ranger who raps with her rappin' raven, Nasdaq.. "this fight is still a 'stokin' ".
George Wooding, Pres. of West of Twin Peaks Central Council and prolific investigative writer for the Westside Observer speaks.
Then Kathy Howard, in brown hat, who started Golden Gate Park Preservation Alliance and Take Back Our Parks to protect our parks from ruin under the current Rec Park Dir, Phil Ginsburg and Rec Park Commission Pres. Mark Buell.
Then boathouse supporter Ron Schmidt speaks,
then Nancy Wuerful, a dynamite park and open space advocate and supporter Chris Hall.
